My client and I are asking you to write a character letter on his/her behalf. (As you may know (name) has been charged in the (name of court) Court with the following offense(s): (list offenses.) My client needs such letters from friends, relatives, co-workers, former teachers and others who know him/her in a variety of life situations. Your letter is of great importance in obtaining fair and just treatment.
The best character letters begin by saying who you are, what you do, how long you have known (name) and how you became acquainted. Please also write about your current relationship and how you feel about him/her.
You should write your frank opinion of his/her character. Do you consider him/her honest? Law abiding? Generous? Does (name) show thoughtfulness and concern for others? What are his/her ambitions in life? How has he/she made a contribution to the community?
Please give concrete examples demonstrating true character. An example of some praiseworthy incident that you know about will help show his/her best qualities in action.
In your letter, you do not need to ignore the fact that (name) is in trouble with the law, especially if he/she has expressed remorse and sorrow for the offense and its consequences.
Your letter can be addressed to me and in it you should ask me to provide it to the court or prosecutor, or the person who is considering the case. I will make sure that it gets to the proper authority.
Thank you for your help. If you have any questions, please contact my office.
